Dr. Frank DeStefano will conduct a walking tour of the lovely stained glass windows of our church on Sunday, November 22th, from 3-4 PM.The Church was built in 1939/1940 as the country was still suffering the effects of the Great Depression. In America, the period between the two world wars saw a true renaissance in Church art and considered to be the purer and more authentic style of the early Middle Ages. At the same time, church designers sought to make their churches more liturgically correct. In 1941 Americans went to war and church building came to a standstill. Practically every stained glass window studio in the country closed its doors as the war effort claimed all the nation’s resources. Most never reopened. Assumption Church remains today a living monument to a short-lived American renaissance.
